The Freya Framework

The robust Freya Certification Framework was created to verify that each product meets Freya's high standards. Below are some details that outline the "why" behind our carefully-curated product selection.

Plant-Based

At Freya, we believe every living being deserves the opportunity to live fully and freely. By being intentional about the ingredients behind the products we carry, we help shape a world that is kinder, more peaceful, and more compassionate. That’s why we choose products made without animal-derived ingredients, processing agents, or by-products, including fish, eggs, dairy, animal flesh, honey, beeswax, leather, lanolin, and animal-based lactic acid. With more than 300,000 known plant species on our planet, there is no shortage of innovative, effective, and high-quality ingredients that deliver exceptional taste and performance, without compromising our values.

Cruelty-Free

As an extension of our compassionate way of living, we believe it’s essential to understand not only what goes into our products, but how those ingredients become the items we use every day. While we are intentional about sourcing plant-based ingredients, we are equally committed to eliminating harm at every stage of the supply chain.

At Freya, cruelty-free means more than the absence of animal testing - it’s a standard of accountability. We certify that all suppliers, including third-party partners, do not test ingredients or finished products on animals. Beyond this, we closely examine each product’s supply chain to ensure there is meaningful oversight, ethical responsibility, and transparency from start to finish. Our goal is to offer products that are not only effective and safe, but created with respect for all beings, human and animal alike.

Ethically Sourced

We define ethical as “a consciousness of moral importance” - Merriam-Webster. That principle guides every product we certify.

We look beyond the finished product to understand the full lifecycle and the people behind it, from ingredient sourcing and production to shipping and delivery. As part of our vetting, we assess whether suppliers monitor working conditions throughout their supply chains, source exclusively from ethical partners, and uphold clear living wage and fair trading policies in practice.

Our goal is simple: to ensure that everyone involved in bringing a product to you is treated respectfully, fairly, and equally, so you can shop with confidence and conscience.

Sustainable

Sustainability is central to everything we do at Freya. We define a sustainable product as one that supports both the environment and the product user today - without compromising the future.

Each product undergoes a rigorous certification process that evaluates its environmental and social impact. We assess the safety of ingredients and materials, water usage across the supply chain, supplier ESG practices, and governance structures. Where applicable, we review sustainability reporting aligned with recognized frameworks such as the UN SDGs, SBTi, SASB, LEED, and GRI.

Through these thorough checks, we look beyond surface-level claims to ensure every product truly aligns with our vision for a more sustainable future.

Low- to Zero-Waste

At Freya, low- to zero-waste means intentionally minimizing waste at every stage of a product’s lifecycle - from sourcing and manufacturing to packaging, shipping, use, and end-of-life. We believe waste is not an inevitable byproduct of consumption, but a design choice that can be reduced through thoughtful systems and accountability.

Through our certification process, we evaluate the waste management practices of our suppliers, the reusability, recyclability, or compostability of all ingredients, materials, and packaging, and each brand’s progress toward closed-loop production models that keep materials in use rather than sending them to landfills.

By choosing partners that intentionally reduce waste at every stage of the lifecycle, we support thoughtful resource use, lower environmental impact, and the transition toward circular, regenerative models.

Carbon Conscious

At Freya, a Carbon Conscious product is one that accounts for the carbon emissions released across its entire lifecycle - from sourcing and production to shipping and disposal - and offsets them, or goes further by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Our certification process looks closely at a supplier’s progress in tracking greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including those of their suppliers, as well as the quality of their carbon offset programs and their measurable reduction targets.

We recognize that every supplier is at a different point on their sustainability journey. We approach this with both support and accountability, encouraging continuous progress while ensuring that each product meets clear standards for a traceable carbon footprint. Our ultimate mission is to make every product we offer a positive step toward a healthier, climate-stable future.

Intentional Ingredients

At Freya, there are four ingredients you will never find in any of our products: Parabens, Phthalates, Synthetic Fragrances, and Artificial Dyes. We know that many other ingredients can cause sensitivities, allergies, or may simply not serve everyone’s body well. That’s why we are deliberate in our certification process. Every ingredient, and its source, is carefully evaluated to meet our standards for plant-based, cruelty-free, ethically sourced, low-waste, and sustainable products. We also prioritize transparency, making it possible to search at the ingredient level so you can confidently find the products that are right for you.
